One can only give
examples of it
2018-2019

  • One can only give examples of it draws inspiration from a neologism coined by the Cubist, Dadaist, and Conceptual artist Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968): the infrathin. This notion lacks a concrete, conceptual definition, as Duchamp himself mentioned in a 1945 interview, and can only be elucidated through examples, such as 'the warmth of a seat which has just been left’, ‘the difference between two forms cast from the same mould’, or ‘when the tobacco smoke smells also of the mouth which exhales it’. These ideas reveal a sensitivity to the subtle differences created by movement, the passage of time, dimension and state shifts, repetitions, or non-visible physical sensations.

In my work, I attempt to translate my own interpretations of the infrathin into visual representations using a combination of still and moving images to bridge the gap caused by its inherent indefinability. To capture these vague and sometimes barely perceptible energies, I have focused not on the object itself but on its trace or projection, its absence rather than its presence, not on what it is but what it's on the verge of becoming or has almost disappeared into; and also explored the differences between each repetition, movement, or replica.

[1] The possible is an infra-thin – The possibility of several tubes of colour becoming a Seurat is the concrete ‘explanation’ of the possible as infra thin. The possible implying the becoming –the passage from one to the other takes place in the infra thin. allegory on ‘forgetting’.

[7] Sameness / similarity / The same (mass production) practical approximation of similarity. In time the same object is not the same after a 1 second interval. what Relations with the identity principle?

[17] Hollow paper (infra-thin space and yet without there being 2 sheets).

[18] The difference (dimensional) between 2 mass produced objects [from the same mold] is an infra thin/when the maximum (?) precision is obtained.

[21] cast shadow oblique infra thin.

[35] 2 forms cast in the same mold(?) differ from each other by infra thin separative amount All “identicals” as identical as they may be, (and the more identical they are) move toward this infra thin separative diference. Two men are not an example of identicality and to the contrary move away from a determinable infra thin difference – but.
